Manganese carbonate occurs naturally as the\u00a0mineral\u00a0rhodochrosite. Approximately 20,000 metric tonnes were produced in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Treatment of aqueous solutions of manganese(II) salts with alkali metal carbonates leads to precipitation of this faintly pink solid. The carbonate is insoluble in water but, like most carbonates, hydrolyses upon treatment with acids to give water-soluble salts.<\/p>\n<p>Manganese carbonate decomposes with release of\u00a0carbon dioxide\u00a0at 200 \u00b0C to give\u00a0manganese(II) oxide:<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>MnCO<sub>3<\/sub>\u00a0? MnO + CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>This method is sometimes employed in the production of\u00a0manganese dioxide\u00a0for dry-cell batteries and for\u00a0ferrites.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Reidies_3-1\"><br \/><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Manganese carbonate is widely used as an additive to plant fertilizers to cure manganese deficient crops.
